SECOND HOME RDU
THE PROBLEM
There are more than 12,000 children in foster care in North Carolina.
There are more than 2,200 children awaiting adoption in North Carolina.
There are more than 79,000 children in kinship care in North Carolina.
More than 50% of foster parents quit within the first year.
About 10% of adoptions disrupt between placement and finalization, and 3% fail after finalization.
One of the main reasons that foster, adoptive, and kinship parents quit is due to a lack of support.
Our Mission
Our mission is to support and equip foster, adoptive and kinship parents in the Raleigh Durham Area, mobilize and share awareness with local churches and the community, and advocate for vulnerable children. We don’t believe that everyone is called to foster or adopt but we do believe that everyone can do something.
Our Vision
We envision a future where more parents are equipped with trauma-informed training and support, ensuring they feel empowered in their roles. Shockingly, 50% of foster parents leave within the first year, primarily due to insufficient support systems. Additionally, approximately 10% of adoptions face disruption between placement and finalization, while about 3% fail after finalization. Our goal is to create lasting stability for children, minimizing the need for them to transition between homes and allowing them to thrive in nurturing and supportive environments.
HOW WE CAN HELP
Support Groups
We have support groups that meet on a monthly basis in-person throughout the Raleigh-Durham area. You don't have to do this alone. Find support and connect with fellow foster, adoptive, and kinship parents.
Find a Support GroupSupport Closet
Our Support Closet is open every 3rd and 5th Sunday of the month and offers families free diapers, wipes, blankets, personal hygiene care, comfort items, reusable water bottles, infant bottles, and backpacks. Families can also receive free meals at the closet each month.
