SECOND HOME RDU

A nonprofit support network for foster, adoptive, and kinship families in the Raleigh/Durham area.

Second Home RDU Update

After five years of serving the community in the RDU area, Second Home has made the difficult decision to merge with other local nonprofit organizations. All of our support inventory has been given over to the Raleigh Foster Closet in an effort to see our shared mission of supporting local foster families continue.

The Raleigh Foster Closet is located in Raleigh, NC and is packed with items for foster families and bio families at reunification. The closet is a free resource to help bridge the gap in the unknown of foster care. The closet offers clothing and shoes (newborn to teen), toys, baby/toddler furniture, baby gear and more. It is run by foster parents and other volunteers who support the foster community. To learn more visit https://www.facebook.com/groups/1071536259698504

We greatly appreciate everybody that has made Second Home RDU possible and all of the families that we've been able to support over the years. Our Executive Director, Brittney Androsian will be stepping down from Second Home RDU, but will continue professionally serving these families as the board chair for RDU For Fams, a nonprofit faith collaborative fighting for vulnerable families. THE PROBLEM

There are more than 12,000 children in foster care in North Carolina.

There are more than 2,200 children awaiting adoption in North Carolina.

There are more than 79,000 children in kinship care in North Carolina.

More than 50% of foster parents quit within the first year.

About 10% of adoptions disrupt between placement and finalization, and 3% fail after finalization.

One of the main reasons that foster, adoptive, and kinship parents quit is due to a lack of support.

Our Mission
Our Mission

Our mission is to support and equip foster, adoptive, and kinship parents in the Raleigh-Durham Area, mobilize and share awareness with local churches and the community, and advocate for vulnerable children. We don’t believe that everyone is called to foster or adopt, but we do believe that everyone can do something.

Our Vision
Our Vision

We envision a future where more parents are equipped with trauma-informed training and support, ensuring they feel empowered in their roles. Shockingly, 50% of foster parents leave within the first year, primarily due to insufficient support systems. Additionally, approximately 10% of adoptions face disruption between placement and finalization, while about 3% fail after finalization. Our goal is to create lasting stability for children, minimizing the need for them to transition between homes and allowing them to thrive in nurturing and supportive environments.
